What’s covered, and what’s not, under your mattress warranty?
What follows pretty much sums up what’s generally covered, and what’s not, when it comes to mattresses warranties. Keep in mind that certain conditions must be met in order for the manufacturer to validate your warranty. If in doubt about what’s covered, and what’s not, always contact the manufacturer.
What’s covered:
- Structural defects in materials, and poor workmanship. Coils or wires that come loose or through the fabric, excessive coil compression, splitting of wood frames, squeaks, rattles and noises are generally covered.
What’s not:
- Loose threads, pilling and stretching of fabrics. These are considered as cosmetic flaws, and are not covered.
- Bent border wires. Border wires can easily be bent during shipping, and are therefore not covered by warranty.
- Mattress handles. Handles are merely designed for mattress rotation. As it’s impossible to determine the use handles are subjected to, handles pulling out are not covered by warranty.
- Mattresses that sag due to depressions caused by someone walking on a foundation. Walking depressions are easily determined on foundation examination, and will void a mattress warranty.
- Sagging of mattresses and foundations due to improper support. Queen and king mattresses require centre support frames.
- Body impressions. Body impressions are a natural occurrence on every mattress (more so on today’s extra plush mattresses), and are not covered by warranty unless they’re a result of premature foam breakdown.
- Comfort. Warranties do not cover a mattress being too hard, too soft, or uncomfortable.
- Stained or soiled mattresses. Stains can void a warranty.
- Mattresses and foundations missing law labels. Law labels identify the date made, dealer name, warranty codes, and model number. You won’t go to jail if you remove law labels, but you may have given your warranty the death sentence.
- Mattresses that were not rotated or flipped as per the manufacturer’s warranty instructions. Failure to rotate a one sided mattress, or failure to rotate and flip a two sided mattress as per the manufacturer’s warranty instructions, can void the warranty.
- The cost of getting a mattress to and from a factory for repair. This cost is the customer’s responsibility.
